19th-C Impressionist Seascape Oil Painting, Marie Joseph Clavell 'I Will'

Fine quality oil on canvas by listed French artist, Marie Joseph Clavell, 'I Will' (1850-1923). Clavell adopted the English pseudonym 'I Will' at the beginning of his career to express the intensity of his work. This painting depicts boats on an estuary and is a beautiful large work, signed and dated 1892, lower left. It is a serene atmospheric scene that draws in the viewer's eye with a large red sail in the foreground. Clavell has skillfully harnessed the soft morning light in lovely pale pinks and blue colors. Displayed in the original giltwood frame. Provenance, private French collection. Clavell's auction records exceed $24,000.

Clavell was named Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1894. He made his debut at the Salon in 1875, and continued showing his work in Parisian exhibitions. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883, receiving an honourable mention in 1884. He received a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, and a bronze at that of 1900.. In 2003, his work was included in the collective exhibition Brittany, Land of Painters ( Bretagne, Terre des Peintres) at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Vannes.

Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment.
